Jay W \ Verified Purchase
I have waited a bit before posting this review because I wanted to have some time to use it in differing circumstances and to see if anything went wrong with it. I was wary about purchasing the SP4 because of the reviews but I am so glad I did. This thing is great! I really love it. It is very lightweight and easy to carry anywhere. I would recommend getting a sleeve for it for protection and easier carrying. It's about the size of a portfolio with my sleeve on it and I often carry it and my portfolio together easily in one hand.
One thing I was concerned with was there are a lot of reviews regarding trouble with battery life and having to do a lot of changing settings to low power and all that. I have not made any adjustments to the power settings and I have found the battery life just fine. Depending on how much you do and how intense the programs you use are, you may have to charge it every night. The way I look at it is like your phone. If you are on your phone playing games or looking at facebook all day long, you are going to have to charge it every night at least. Same thing here. If you are playing games or on your Surface working all day long, the battery is going to need to be recharged. It's not rocket science. I find the battery to be plenty long enough. I'll give you one example on this. One of the reasons I took the plunge and bought my Surface is because I wanted something smaller than my 17" laptop to have on the plane for a recent trip. This thing was perfect. The size was perfect and it was much easier to deal with on a cramped airline. I watched a movie (with headphones, obviously) for the two and a half hour flight there and again on the way back and both times I still had 80%+ battery left. Enough said about that.
The ability to use the SP4 as a tablet or a laptop is great. The type cover (sold separately but a must have in my opinion) works great as a keyboard/screen cover and detaches so easily when I don't need it. I often type/work/study with the keyboard until I am ready for bed and then I just remove the type cover and have the whole tablet I can take with me to bed for reading something on the kindle app or playing a game or whatever before I fall asleep. The versatility is so nice.
The Surface Pen (included!) is great as well. It is very responsive and there is no noticeable lag between touching it to the the screen and the mark showing up. I am no artist by any means but it is still fun to play with and useful for marking up PDFs/documents or even taking notes during a meeting or while researching something.
I could go on and on about how much I like this thing. As I said, I was on the fence and one of the bigger factors was the price. Yes, it is expensive. Maybe even a little overpriced. I went with the 4/128 model and added a 128 GB SD card to keep the price down a little and I couldn't be happier. Bottom line: I love this thing and I am so glad I went ahead and bought it for myself. I would absolutely buy it again if I had to do it over again.
